These notes describe what the editorial team looks for and what to send with your piece. They apply to every type the platform publishes.
Length by type
- Article: 800 to 2,000 words.
- Report: 1,500 to 3,000 words.
- Publication: 400 to 1,000 words.
- Position paper: 1,200 to 2,500 words.
Structure
- A title that states the argument, not only the subject.
- An opening paragraph that carries the point, so a reader who stops there still learns something.
- A subheading every few hundred words.
- A close that says what follows from the argument.
Sources
Link every figure and quotation to where it came from, and name the study, report, or dataset in the text. Where a claim rests on your own fieldwork or professional experience, say so in the sentence that makes it.
Images
Send one image of 1,200 pixels wide or more, with its credit line and the right to publish it. A piece that arrives without an image is published with a cover from the Institute's own set.
What to send
- The text of the piece, with its title.
- A biography of two or three sentences, written in the third person.
- A personal photograph.
- Two or three topics you write about, which appear on your profile.
House style
- English, plain and precise, in Canadian spelling.
- Commas, periods, and colons rather than dashes.
- Full name and title at first mention, surname afterwards.
- Numerals for quantities and dates, words for numbers below ten in running text.
After you send
The editorial team reads every submission and replies by email. Accepted work is scheduled, edited, and published with your name, photograph, and biography, and it joins your profile page on the platform.
